The Constitution

I wonder how the Founders knew
So well, the minds of men,
That leaders all would seek to rule
With but a stroke of pen,
That liberties we hold so dear
Could be wrested from our grasp
By those with power and control,
Without our counsel asked.
It’s Human nature, they well knew,
Would allow a man to seek
To be in charge of all the land
While treading on the meek.
They knew that choosing not to stand
For the document they wrought
Would destroy the basic rights of men
And shackle free men’s thought.
So, read their words, as true today
As two hundred years before
And, even though we live our lives
To a different music score,
The chorus still remains the same
With words of wisdom shared,
To guard our freedom at all cost
Or end in chains our fare.
